GKN Weekly Update 6/28/10

And a Happy 98 Degree Day to you! One of the perks of being self-employed is that you only have to leave the house when you land a gig at a remote studio. You would literally have to pay me to go outside today!

Here are some tasty nuggets for you today...

I'm getting a logo! It's in the early stages and I don't have any sketches yet, but when I do I'll post them.

Remember last week when I told you about Infinivox's newest release "The Year's Top Ten Tales of Science Fiction 2"? You can hear one of the stories for free! To give a listen, go to:

BTW if you go to www.audible.com and search for me, you can find every audio book I've done!

Good friend and fellow GKN member Trish Basanyi & I did this spot together for Remove It Now:

Also, Trish and I had a great time last week recording all the voices for Blastaway! In the coming months we will put together a Facebook Group and perhaps a website promoting this project. Stay tuned!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Remember when I said my clan is having issues? Unfortunately, they have either stayed the same or gotten worse. I am getting more comfortable with the fact that there is nothing I do to help except to be present and supportive. Sometimes that is all you need to do to be a good family member or friend. It also reminds me of a great quote from the wise Dan Duckworth, "Don't complain and don't explain". The quote was originally intended for talents meeting agents, but I think it works here, too. I'm complaining less and explaining less in general and it's a good feeling.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Americans hate problems they can’t answer in ten seconds. Norman Mailer

STUFF!: I saw Jonah Hex and Get Him To The Greek last week. One was bad and one was hilarious. Can you guess which is which?

GKN Weekly Update 6/21/10

Happy Summer! I hope everyone enjoys the longest day of the year. I was forced to enjoy it as much as I can. I woke up at 4:45 AM for no good reason!

BTW thanks to all of you who sent those kinds words concerning my goofy "newscast" blog last week. Also, thanks for sending words of support concerning my clan's recent woes. The good news is that things are looking up! Moving on...

I love working with my friends. Here's the latest project Trish Basanyi and I did together:

http://www.removeitnow.com

I also love making new friends. Last week I did a voiceover for www.CodeBaby.com. It hasn't released yet, but check out the website too see what a cool service they provide!

I also did a spot for Kramerica Management via my old friends at Video Facility. Check out their reel here.

Oh, and I booked two more audio books thanks to Infinivox! I will be narrating Mayflower II by Stephen Baxter (I narrated his story Turing's Apples last year and it was awesome!) and The Political Officer by Charles Coleman Finlay.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Another great week in the books! I must say that the flood of kind words last week was a big help. As always I try to count my blessings, so to speak, and remember how good I have it. My tip is to do for each other what so many of you did for me last week. The Good Karma Network is about supporting each other, so please continue to do so!

STUFF!: Did anyone see Jonah Hex yet? I can't wait to check that out!

GKN Weekly Update 6/14/10

Good morning, and welcome to the Good Karma Network Weekly Update. I'm Tom Dheere.

Here are today's top stories:

Tom Dheere's latest audio book project "Top Ten Tales of Science Fiction 2" will release on Wednesday, June 23. Mr. Dheere narrates five of the ten stories. When asked about the project, he said he was looking forward to the release and would like to thank Allan Kaster of Infinivox for casting him as well as Siera Spreen of Panetta Studios for recording and editing the project.

One of Tom Dheere's animated science fiction projects "Blastaway" is slowly but surely moving forward. Pre-production is fully underway. The production script is complete and all roles have been cast. This five-minute short will be used as a marketing tool to promote the full-length feature, which is currently seeking funding.

In Science and Technology News, Tom Dheere has purchased a Blackberry Bold. Mr. Dheere felt it was about time he finally entered the 21st Century. When asked what he thought of the new device he replied, "It's like having a laptop in my pocket!"

TIP OF THE WEEK: As you know, I try to keep this blog as perky and professional as possible (goofy fake newscast aside) so please forgive this temporary lapse. Anyway, the "bad things happen to good people" bug has hit my clan pretty hard over the past few weeks. Don't worry, nobody is dying, but it's been pretty weird around here and I've been quite preoccupied by it.

As a result, I haven't been at my best. That's fine because we all have our ups and downs. What isn't fine is that I have not been COMMUNICATING this fact to the right people in the right way. There have been repercussions and I'm dealing with it. I would spare you this situation.

When you're going through whatever you may be going through at any given time, don't withdraw! If you are going to anyway, at least announce it. There is nothing worse than a person constantly worrying and second-guessing themselves because they don't know why so-and-so isn't returning their calls. It's cruel.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The definition of mental health is work and love. Sigmund Freud

STUFF!: Does anyone know of some good apps to download into my Blackberry? I was told Poynt is a good one...

GKN Weekly Update 6/7/10

Good morning, ladies and germs! I was babysitting Asha most of last Monday so blogging wasn't terribly practical. Sorry I missed my weekly rant!

So, I did a medical narration last week for a great new client. I narrated a few short speeches on DNA repair and this is one of the lines:

"Hypoxanthine DNA glycosylase, 3-methyladenine DNA glycosylase, and uracil DNA glycosylase recognize hypoxanthine, and 3-methyladenine, and uracil, respectively, when these bases are present in DNA."

Say that five times fast. Or better yet, one time slow! Obviously, this wasn't easy. The client provided me with pronunciation guides as well as audio clips to assist me. After many, many takes (Thank God I recorded this at home with nobody listening!), I finally admitted something to myself that, as a voiceover talent, is unacceptable: I suck at pronunciation guide terminology and symbols.

Apparently I slept through that part of class. So, fellow voice-talkers, I need a favor. Does anyone have a printable one-page pronunciation guide? It would make my life, and the lives of my clients, MUCH easier!

TIP OF THE WEEK: I've said it before and I'll say it again, KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS! If you stink at something, admit it, and try to improve. AND don't be ashamed to ask for help! It takes strength to admit weakness.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: One disease, long life. No disease, short life. Chinese Proverb

STUFF!: I saw Prince of Persia last week. I hate to use the word "stupid" but I can't think of a more appropriate adjective. BTW my friend T.J. Zoltner posted on Facebook last week: "According to Prince of Persia all you need is eyeliner, stubble and a British accent and you too can be Persian." That cracks me up!

Have a great week!

Did three voiceovers today! Two medical narrations and one commercial. I deserve something. How about a movie...?
