GKN Weekly Update 9/27/10
And a good morning to you on this chilly, damp Monday! Quite a change from the upper 80's weather we had just a few days ago. Ah, September, the month that just can't make up its damn mind!
I just watched an interesting video on Boing Boing.net, my morning coffee. Check it out...
Where Good Ideas Come From
I'm a huge proponent of creative thinking, innovation, and entrepreneurship so this video intrigued me. My real motivation for watching it is that I haven't worked on my Project TERRA screenplay in months and I was seeking inspiration. I'm not exactly sure why I haven't written in so long. I know what comes next in the story and I have my notes prepared & everything. I just haven't taken the plunge. What's worse is that I'm in the home stretch. Plot Point Two is done and the main characters are streaking towards the climax of the story. Maybe I don't want to finish it. Maybe I'm scared that my partners at 3ative Productions will think it sucks and I'll have to start over. I don't know. Anyway, maybe just talking about here it will get me off the couch, so to speak.
TIP OF THE WEEK: I read over that paragraph I just wrote and boy, am I a whiny little girl! Don't you hate it when you get caught up in your head for no good reason when the solution is so simple? As Bo Jackson would say, JUST DO IT. If you're afraid to write, just write. It doesn't matter if the writing sucks, just get over the fear of the action by taking the action. Easier said than done, of course, but it is so liberating when you finally take the plunge, then you laugh at yourself for being such a dingus!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Chance favors the connected mind. Steven Johnson

GKN Weekly Update 9/20/10
Good morning to y'all on this lovely Monday morning! I've already been to NYC and back for a recording session at NY Audio. It went really well and I worked with a very talented & nice girl named Sol. That means sun, ya know.
Last week was all about me getting back on track with diet, exercise, auditions, and whatnot. It worked, for the most part. And then comes days like Friday! Friday I was up at 7:00 (that's early for me), at NY Audio in NYC (hi Pierce & Laura!) by 10, back on the road at 11:30, drove to Princeton for a 2:00 recording session (hi Paul, Carrie, and Marci!), on the road at 3'ish to get to my friend's store by 5:00, and then work until 11:00 PM. Fortunately, I was relieved at 7 so I got to go home and pass out. All the while I was worrying about getting to the next location on time, being prepared to narrate, wondering if I was going to have time for lunch, blah blah blah.
So, Saturday night a bunch of friends and I go to this biker bar to see our friend's band perform (BTW they're a fantastic cover band called Haymaker!) There's about 20 of us and we took over half of the bar and the regulars are sitting on the other side of the bar. We're whooping it up & having a blast while the regulars are just sitting there. Many of them aren't even talking even though they're sitting with other people. They're not even bopping to the music. They're just...there.
TIP OF THE WEEK: Watching those people made me wonder: are they happy? Do they have fulfilling careers? Maybe, maybe not. But who am I to pass judgment based on my observations? Who says they're not happier or more satisfied with life than I am? I hope they are, because days like Friday once again remind me how good I have it to be zipping about doing what I love and spending time with people whose company I truly enjoy. Don't get caught up in the minutia of your day-to-day goings-on. Remember to appreciate your health, your happiness, and the people around you!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Rock and roll is ridiculous. It’s funny. Four jerks and a police escort. That’s funny. Bono
STUFF!: Does anyone have some lederhosen and a few chainsaws I can borrow? I have a science project coming up...

GKN Weekly Update 9/13/10
Hello and Happy Birthday to me! Whoo Hoo!!!
BTW thank you for the FLOOD of Birthday wishes that came my way via email, text message, and wall posts on Facebook & Voiceover Universe. I really appreciate it!
The past few weeks has been a blur of running errands, moving stuff to mom's new apartment, and trying to spend some quality time with friends & family. I would like to think that things will settle down starting tomorrow, but then I remember that I have 50 medical narration scripts to record by the end of next month. Eeek!
I did have a very nice nice recording session last week at Onomatopoeia for one of my e-learning clients. CityVox (the artist formerly known as Full House) doesn't have their facility quite ready yet, hence the session at Onomatopoeia. I worked with four great talents with whom I've had the pleasure of recording with many times before. Much of the session dealt with demonstrating elisions. It was hard! Even though us Americans are such lazy speakers, it was difficult to speak improperly on purpose. When you're in the booth you work hard to be verbally "on point", so to speak, to the point that it becomes second nature to be so articulate and clear. So when you have to speak badly on purpose, you get self-conscious and the slurs sound artificial. It was quite the learning experience!
TIP OF THE WEEK: I am 39 years old today. For those of you who have jokingly or seriously commented on my age (and I say this with a smile), STUFF IT!!! In the grand scheme of things I am young. I look young, I act young, and I feel young. I have energy and optimism, vim and vigor. My advice to you who hang your identity & self-worth on your age (and I know some of you are reading this), knock it off! You are you, not what your birth certificate says. Don't equate that number to your value or your self-esteem. Enjoy life, no matter how much or how little of it you have experienced.

GKN Weekly Update 9/7/10
Happy Labor Day!
I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. I celebrated my birthday one week early with a BBQ at my friend Jim's house. Good times, good times!
Fall is unofficially here and I'm back on track! This summer was a bit of a wash for me. I had a friend stay with me for six weeks and my mom just stayed with me for two weeks and it totally threw me off of my routine. I barely did any auditions, my diet & exercise regiment went splat, and I wrote virtually nothing for Project: TERRA and Blastaway. It's not their fault, it's mine. I'm a creature of habit and I need structure to get those Quadrant Two things done (Important but Not Urgent Tasks). So far this morning I've already exercised, paid bills, ran a bunch of errands, and got my hair cut. Feeling good!
I am excited for the fall. It's my favorite time of year and I have a MONSTER gig coming down the pike. I have 50 medical narrations to record by the end of next month, Yikes! I'll apologize now to those of you who ask me to hang out but I stay home so I can practice saying things like myophosphorylase.
TIP OF THE WEEK: I'm glad we have seasons and holidays. It makes these great natural chapters in your year that allow you to reassess your situation and have little re-starts when you get off track. With that in mind, go dust off that 2010 Action Plan and see how you're doing so far. What goals have you hit? Missed? Haven't even tried?
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: You gotta learn to laugh. It’s the way to true love. John Travolta from the film “Michael”
STUFF!: I got some great feedback concerning my anti-nerd rant last week and I want to thank you for your support. Keep spreadin' the love, folks!
